The World's Most Okayest Mom

Finding joy in the beautiful chaos of everyday motherhood.

If your living room doubles as the playroom, you know how quickly toys can take over. By the end of the day, it can feel like your house has disappeared under blocks, cars and stuffed animals.

We have three kids under three, so I stopped chasing a Pinterest-perfect playroom a long time ago. I just wanted a system that made cleanup fast and still looked nice when company came over.

After trying one giant toy basket (which honestly made the mess worse), we switched to a simple cube organizer with woven baskets. It has been one of the easiest changes we’ve made in our living room.

Why One Giant Toy Basket Didn’t Work

At first, we thought one oversized toy basket would make cleanup simple.

Instead, every time one of the kids wanted a specific toy, they dumped the entire basket onto the floor looking for it. Five minutes later, every toy in the house was spread across the living room again.

It also meant smaller toys disappeared underneath bigger ones, books got bent, and cleanup somehow took longer every night.

The Toy Storage System That Actually Worked

We replaced the oversized basket with a simple four-cube organizer and matching woven baskets.

Each basket loosely holds a different type of toy. One has vehicles, another has stuffed animals, another has books, and another holds random toddler toys.

I say loosely because I don’t spend time keeping everything perfectly organized. Cars end up with stuffed animals. Bath toys somehow end up everywhere.

That doesn’t matter.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is making cleanup easy enough that I actually do it every night.

Why This Works So Well

  • Cleanup usually takes less than five minutes.
  • The baskets hide visual clutter.
  • The kids can pull out one basket instead of every toy.
  • The living room feels calm again after bedtime.
  • It naturally creates toy rotation without extra work.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

This has probably been my biggest lesson as a mom.

A functional home doesn’t need perfect organization systems. It just needs systems that are easy enough to stick with.

Some nights every toy ends up in the correct basket. Other nights we simply toss everything into the nearest basket and call it a day.

Either way, the floor gets cleared, the room feels peaceful again, and that’s a win in my book.

The Products We Use

IKEA KALLAX Cube Organizer

This organizer gives every basket its own home while blending into the living room like regular furniture instead of looking like toy storage.

IKEA Woven Storage Baskets

I love these because they hide the toys, they’re sturdy enough for toddlers to use, and they instantly make the room look less cluttered.

Final Thoughts

If your living room doubles as your playroom, don’t feel like you need a Pinterest-perfect organization system. The best storage solution is the one you’ll actually use every day. For our family, this simple cube organizer and a few woven baskets have made cleanup faster and our home feel calmer.
